{"id":12477,"date":"2023-08-01T14:16:58","date_gmt":"2023-08-01T05:16:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sasugacommunications.com\/ja\/?p=12477"},"modified":"2023-08-07T09:16:27","modified_gmt":"2023-08-07T00:16:27","slug":"good-news-bad-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sasugacommunications.com\/ja\/good-news-bad-news\/","title":{"rendered":"Good News, Bad News&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Think of the last time you received bad news.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How did you react?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Has bad news ever turned out to be good news for you?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let me share 4 brief personal examples from a recent trip:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><b>Bad news 1: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After flying from Haneda and landing at Heathrow, the first email I saw was \u201cYour Airbnb has been canceled.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I was in the UK for a long-overdue family reunion. My parents were traveling down to London from Yorkshire, my daughter coming up from Kingston, and my husband flying in a few days after me from Japan. At last, we would all be together for the first time since 2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But nice 3-bedroom places with easy access for those with walking difficulties (my dad) and within our budget aren\u2019t common in central London. A few months before the trip, it had taken me aaaaaaages to find a suitable Airbnb.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Good news 1: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When I told her, Keri hopped online and miraculously found a place that had just become available. Unbelievable! A beautiful apartment that was in an even better location than the first one and at a lower cost!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then this happened\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Bad news 2: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hiroshi was having a shower in the hotel the evening he arrived and the shower curtain and rail fell on top of him! He was already unimpressed because there were no slippers, fridge, safe, warm toilet seat or bottom washer (all of which would be normal in Japan)!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Good news 2: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When I told the staff about the shower rail, they offered us free \u201cfull English\u201d breakfast for the three of us. It was delicious! And Hiroshi was impressed &#8211; lol!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-12479 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/sasugacommunications.com\/ja\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/english-breakfast.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"301\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/301;\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And then this\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Bad news 3: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On our way to see the Lion King musical, the traffic was crazy, and a car ran into the back of our Uber as we were getting out! This scary and chaotic situation happened just 15 minutes before the performance started. Outside the theater was terribly crowded. How on Earth would we get to our seats on time?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Good news 3:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> When the Lyceum Theatre staff saw my dad approaching with a walker, they led us to a special entrance and directly to our seats, so we bypassed all the crowds and still had time to pop to the loo! Fantastic (and I highly recommend the show if you haven\u2019t seen it!).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-12480 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/sasugacommunications.com\/ja\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Theater-01-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/300;\" \/> <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-12481 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/sasugacommunications.com\/ja\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Theater-02-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/300;\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And, finally\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Bad news 4:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> I\u2019m drafting this on the train traveling back down to London after staying with my parents up in Yorkshire. Our train was delayed by 40 minutes. This means we\u2019ll miss our connection and most likely eventually arrive hours later at Kings Cross during rush hour traffic with suitcases\u2026. I wonder what will happen\u2026?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Good news 4: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(see update below\u2026)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether it\u2019s in your personal life or at work, you no doubt receive \u201cbad news\u201d and \u201cgood news\u201d on a regular basis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As human beings, we naturally focus on the negative and the bad news. It\u2019s a part of our survival mechanism. That\u2019s because bad news could be a sign of danger, and the oldest part of our brain wants to protect us from that.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ever wondered why there\u2019s so much bad news on TV? It\u2019s because the producers know that bad news grabs our attention.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And it can be sooooooo easy to get upset about bad news, right?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s normal to be shocked, sad, angry or feel other emotions at first. Those are automatic reactions triggered by the older part of the brain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s the thing: What happened happened.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s our choice whether we call it bad news or good news.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s our choice whether we accept it or get ourselves all wound up about it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And it\u2019s our choice what we focus on next.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, when my train was delayed, I was disappointed, but I couldn\u2019t do anything to make that train come faster, could I?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead of focusing on the disappointment, I chose to be open to the possibility that maybe things would somehow work out, and I turned my attention to the great book I was reading on my Kindle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s just be clear: I haven\u2019t always been this calm and accepting of situations that are out of my control.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The younger me would probably have gone into a deeper state of annoyance and stress and stayed there longer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But have you ever considered how much time and physical, mental, and emotional energy we can waste doing that? Mottainai!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After acknowledging those emotions and facing the situation, we can then turn our attention to \u201cCan I do something about it?\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If not, we can learn from the situation (allow buffer time when traveling by train in the UK!) and then move on.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conversely, if we can do something to deal with the bad news, we have a choice to do that.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When we shift our attention from the bad news, not only does focusing on a potential positive possibility increase the likelihood of better outcomes (because we can see broader options), it feels better, and research shows that it can even benefit our health and mortality!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.harvard.edu\/gazette\/story\/2016\/12\/optistic-women-live-longer-are-healthier\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><u>a Harvard study<\/u><\/strong><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of 70,000 women over an 8-year period, t<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he most optimistic quartile of women had a nearly 30 percent lower risk of dying compared with the least optimistic quartile. The most optimistic women had a 16 percent lower risk of dying from cancer; 38 percent lower risk of dying from heart disease; 39 percent lower risk of dying from stroke; 38 percent lower risk of dying from respiratory disease; and 52 percent lower risk of dying from infection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s quite amazing!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, what happened with the train? Well, with just a few minutes to change platforms and carrying heavy suitcases and bags, we miraculously made our connection and got our original reserved seats!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019m so happy that I didn\u2019t waste my time or energy feeling upset or stressed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Good news or bad news?
