{"id":12768,"date":"2023-10-10T00:00:08","date_gmt":"2023-10-09T15:00:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sasugacommunications.com\/ja\/?p=12768"},"modified":"2025-07-02T14:39:05","modified_gmt":"2025-07-02T05:39:05","slug":"do-you-really-need-to-say-sorry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sasugacommunications.com\/ja\/do-you-really-need-to-say-sorry\/","title":{"rendered":"Do You Really Need To Say &#8220;Sorry&#8221;?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I was on a call to confirm details about an upcoming corporate speaking engagement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since we were meeting online for the first time, everyone briefly introduced themselves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I was struck by how each of the Japanese women immediately apologized or put themselves down in some way.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One said, \u201cI\u2019m new and I don\u2019t know much. I\u2019m sorry.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another said, \u201cI\u2019ve been with the company for a long time, but I make mistakes every day.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And one lady apologized for her poor presentation slides (which I\u2019d actually thought were quite good),<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019m not criticizing these women. After all, apologizing is normal in Japanese culture.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And, in fact, it\u2019s not exclusive to Japan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I grew up in the UK, which also has a strong traditional culture of apology (<\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/kUAz50aJ7rk?si=nfUu2J9SiRuB1F2T\"><u>here\u2019s a hilarious 30-second example from British comedian John Cleese<\/u><\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But excessive apology in a global business environment can lead to\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Misunderstandings<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Loss of trust<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wasting time<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lowering your self-esteem\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019ve probably heard of the story of the boy who cried wolf (\u30aa\u30aa\u30ab\u30df\u5c11\u5e74).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He cried, \u201cWolf!\u201d so many times that when an actual wolf came, nobody believed him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you say, \u201cI\u2019m sorry\u201d repeatedly, do you think people are going to take you seriously when you genuinely need to apologize?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, stop saying, \u201cI\u2019m sorry\u201d unless it\u2019s absolutely necessary.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whenever you find yourself starting to write it, delete it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you notice you\u2019re about to say it, stop it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you realize you just said it, make a mental note to avoid it next time. It will probably take a little practice. That\u2019s normal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Notice though, how much stronger you start to feel when you stop apologizing so much.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To be clear, I\u2019m not advising you to be impolite here. Just take out the unnecessary \u201cI\u2019m sorries\u201d and save your apologies for when they\u2019re really necessary.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I talk more about \u201csorry\u201d and other expressions to avoid in Episode 73 of the Sasuga!
