Where was my bag with my laptop, credit card, and other valuables!!!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My mind was racing just minutes after I\u2019d emerged from the lovely, relaxing hot baths at my local spa in central Tokyo.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s what had happened\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019d realized the locker key wristband wasn\u2019t on my wrist. D\u2019oh!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At first, I was calm. I looked around, but couldn\u2019t find it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No worries though. This was Japan after all. Someone would\u2019ve handed it in.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I located a staff member and explained that I\u2019d lost my locker key.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She did a little walkie-talkie check &#8211; to reception, I assumed &#8211; but then told me that no key had been handed in.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not handed in? A little voice of concern started to pop up in my mind.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She asked my 4-digit locker number &#8211; not something I usually commit to memory\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Er\u2026 29\u2026 yes, I was sure it started with 29\u2026\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Er\u2026 86! 2986! Yes, that sounded right. Yes, that was it!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We went to the locker together.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And that\u2019s when I found myself standing in front of the open and empty locker!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My mind plummeted into panic. I could clearly picture my purple backpack with all the contents. Someone must have found the key, opened the locker, and stolen my things!!!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Okay, let\u2019s skip to the good part\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A few minutes later, I met my husband at reception. We could confirm my locker number because we\u2019d checked in together.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It wasn\u2019t 2986 after all!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And it turned out that someone had handed in a key, which I\u2019d apparently left lying around!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And, here\u2019s the best bit\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When I opened my locker, I discovered that I hadn\u2019t even brought my rucksack or my laptop! I\u2019d brought a yellow Winnie the Pooh tote bag with minimal belongings &#8211; lol!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why am I telling you this?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Well, first, I hope it gives you a laugh.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But more importantly, I hope you can take something away from this: <\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Don\u2019t believe everything you think.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let me explain why.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our reptilian brain &#8211; the oldest part of the human brain &#8211; focuses on our survival.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even though this part of the brain developed 500 million years ago, it\u2019s still fully active today and causes all sorts of unconscious, and often inconvenient, behavior.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two behaviors that are relevant to this story are<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>1. It focuses on the negative<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Imagine a primitive human being. She sees a beautiful sunset (positive). But then she notices a rustling in the grass, which could mean a dangerous animal is approaching (negative).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Which is more important to focus on for her survival? Of course it\u2019s the negative.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She\u2019s highly likely to survive a sunset. She may not survive an encounter with a dangerous animal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019ve ever felt bad about yourself because you tend to focus on the negative &#8211; you\u2019re a normal human being!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, if you know me at all, you might say, \u201cBut, Helen, you always seem so positive.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes, much of the time I am positive. It\u2019s a <\/span><b><i>conscious<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> choice.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes though, my reptilian brain still gets the better of me.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>2. It stops rational thinking<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now imagine that dangerous animal is about to lunge after our primitive female.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does she think, \u201cHmm, I wonder what my best strategy is here? Am I strong enough to fight back? Shall I run away? Where\u2019s the best place to go?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course not! She automatically starts running.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When your life\u2019s in danger, taking time to think could be fatal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your body starts pumping out stress hormones &#8211; adrenaline and cortisol &#8211; to help you fight or flee. And it cuts the connection to the neocortex &#8211; the thinking part of the brain.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This means you can no longer think logically.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ever been giving a presentation and your mind went blank?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your heart was probably beating fast too.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those are signs that your reptilian brain believes you\u2019re somehow under threat (scary audience!) and is attempting to protect you.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It stops you from thinking logically because that\u2019s too slow and pumps more blood around your body, so that you can fight or run away!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So what can you do in today\u2019s world if your reptilian brain is attempting to protect you, but you\u2019re not really in danger?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you notice your negative thinking, consider these questions:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is that true?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How do I know it\u2019s true?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What could be another perspective or possibility?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most of the time, this works very well for me and I hope you find this useful too.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The locker incident was an exception. I\u2019m still not sure why my reptilian brain was so triggered that day. But it was a strong reminder of its power.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whenever you have irrational moments, my recommendation is to recognize that you\u2019re human. If you hurt someone in the process, be sure to make amends.
