How confident are you that they convey your message clearly? How engaging and persuasive are your slides?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since my early days as a \u201ccommunication specialist\u201d with McKinsey Japan, I\u2019ve had the pleasure of coaching thousands of business professionals in honing their presentation skills, including overcoming nerves, analyzing the audience, structuring the story, boosting body language and voice, handling Q&amp;A confidently &#8211; and even what to do when you go blank!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is all about the presenter. But what about the presentation slides?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Slides are supposed to be supporting materials, but so often they end up being distracting or confusing for the audience (and a time-consuming pain for the presenter to prepare).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So I\u2019d like to encourage you to take inspiration from\u00a0 the Japanese concept of <\/span><b><i>danshari<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, (which literally means \u201crefuse, dispose, separate\u201d) to help you create clear and engaging slides.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is a strategy for less effort in creating your slides and more impact in your presentations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #5a296d;\"><b>\u65ad <\/b><b><i>Dan<\/i><\/b><b> = Refuse<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First, for every piece of information or data you\u2019re thinking of including in your slide, ask yourself, \u201cIs it essential?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People often include LOTS of information for two reasons:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They don\u2019t want to forget anything important when they\u2019re presenting<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> They want to show how much work they\u2019ve done<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The problem is that too much information can easily confuse your audience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can learn techniques to help you remember your content as well as how to recover quickly if you go blank (which is normal).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And when you present in a clear, confident, and engaging way, you don\u2019t need to show how much work you\u2019ve done because you\u2019ve already gained people\u2019s trust with your professional delivery.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #5a296d;\"><b>\u6368 <\/b><b><i>Sha<\/i><\/b><b> = Dispose<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once you\u2019ve decided on the information or data to include in your slides, dispose of unnecessary words, symbols, and colors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Words<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 In addition to deleting nonessential words, you can also look for ways to rephrase more concisely. For example, change \u201coutcome of the meeting\u201d to \u201cmeeting outcome.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Symbols<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 For symbols, I include punctuation. So if you\u2019re using bullet points, you don\u2019t need a period at the end. In fact, you may not even need the bullet points!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Colors<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 Are you using a pie chart with lots of segments and different colors for each? It\u2019s hard work for your audience if their eyes have to go back and forth between the legend and the chart to fully understand what each color refers to. Instead, highlight just the one or two segments of the pie that you want to draw attention to.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remember, your slides are to support your message. Your slides are not a textbook.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #5a296d;\"><b>\u96e2<\/b><b><i> Ri<\/i><\/b><b> = Separate<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Separate yourself from the need to rely on your slides to remember your presentation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your content is so complex that you can\u2019t remember it, how can you expect your audience to remember what you say?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Create a simple structure with a logical flow, so that it\u2019s easy for you to remember and that you could present even without the slides.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you separate yourself from your slides and no longer rely on them, you\u2019ll feel more confident and you can focus on your audience. When you focus on your audience, you\u2019re a more engaging and persuasive presenter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to effective slide design, but I hope you find this <\/span><b><i>danshari <\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">approach useful for your next presentation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Declutter what\u2019s not essential, keep your message clear and concise, and build your connection with your audience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019d like to listen to me talking about this topic, tune into Episode 94 of the Sasuga!
