It was a genuine mistake. He meant to say \u201c<em>tsutanai<\/em> nihongo\u201d (<em>poor<\/em> Japanese). The Japanese clients found it very funny.<\/p>\n<p>Humor, especially when unintended, is a great way to grab the audience\u2019s attention and build a connection.<\/p>\n<p>An apology is not.<\/p>\n<p>An apology such as, \u201cI\u2019m sorry about my bad English\u201d sucks the energy out of the room in an instant.<\/p>\n<p>Focusing on the language sounds like an excuse: \u201cWell, if it wasn\u2019t for my linguistic limitations, this would be a fabulous presentation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The audience thinks, \u201cUh-oh, this is going to be painful\u201d and loses the will to listen.<\/p>\n<p>Whether or not you refer to\u00a0your ability, the audience can and will judge you. So you\u2019re wasting your time (and theirs) by apologizing.<\/p>\n<p>More important, they may think your English isn\u2019t bad at all! It takes guts to give a presentation and it takes even more to do it in your non-native language. <b>The ability to connect with the audience is much more important<\/b> than grammar, pronunciation, or sophisticated vocabulary.<\/p>\n<p>Next time you\u2019re presenting, don\u2019t start with a boring apology. Let the audience be the judge of how \u201cbad\u201d you are.
