In Step 2, I introduced four tips to connect with the other person<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n Once you\u2019ve focused and connected, it\u2019s crucial to confirm that you\u2019ve understood what the other person is saying!<\/p>\n To quote\u00a0George Bernhard Shaw:<\/p>\n \u201cThe single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n Paraphrasing is a wonderful way to confirm your understanding.<\/p>\n To paraphrase means to restate in your own words what the other person said.<\/p>\n When you want to check that you understand a problem or a request or the next steps at the end of a meeting, paraphrasing is a terrific technique.<\/p>\n Paraphrasing is\u00a0especially important in global business, where people often have diverse interpretations of what\u2019s said depending their culture and background.<\/b><\/p>\n If you’re curious about how you can start using this tool, here are two expressions for paraphrasing that I often use.<\/p>\n 1. \u201cSo if I understand correctly, you\u2019re saying [restate in your own words what the person said]. Is that right?\u201d<\/p>\n 2. \u201cCould I just confirm my understanding? [Restate in your own words what the person said.] Is that correct?\u201d<\/p>\n Practice\u00a0paraphrasing and see how many times your understanding is correct and how many times the other person corrects you (and helps you avoid a miscommunication in the making).<\/p>\n * \u00a0 \u00a0 * \u00a0 \u00a0 * \u00a0 \u00a0 * \u00a0 \u00a0 *<\/p>\n If you think about it, paraphrasing is actually a way of asking a question.
