But the lie just plopped out of my mouth before I could even think.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>While ordering lunch, I told the lady selling Thai food from a truck near my office that I\u2019d just got back from Bangkok (that was true).<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>\u201cHow long were you there?\u201d \u201cOh, just one night\u201d (that was true).<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>\u201cAh, for work?\u201d \u201cEr, yes\u201d (not true \u2013 yes, I did some work by the pool while I was there, but I didn\u2019t go <em>for<\/em> work).<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>I grabbed my gapao rice and scurried back to the office, wondering to myself, \u201cWhat happened there? Why did I lie?\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>I eventually realized that I felt embarrassed to admit that I was taking time off. Well, it just sounds so extravagant and self-indulgent to fly to Bangkok for just one day for fun, doesn\u2019t it?<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><b>Clearly, it was time to reread my favorite book, <span style=\"color: #3f2b56;\"><a style=\"color: #3f2b56;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.co.jp\/Essentialism-Disciplined-Pursuit-Greg-McKeown\/dp\/0804137382\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em><b><u>Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less<\/u><\/b><\/em><b><u> by Greg McKeown<\/u><\/b><\/a><\/span> <\/b>(\u30a8\u30c3\u30bb\u30f3\u30b7\u30e3\u30eb\u601d\u8003 \u6700\u5c11\u306e\u6642\u9593\u3067\u6210\u679c\u3092\u6700\u5927\u306b\u3059\u308b). The author writes,<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>\u201cWhat if we stopped celebrating being busy as a measurement of importance? What if instead we celebrated now much time we had spent listening, pondering, meditating, and enjoying time with the most important people in our lives? &#8230;I have a vision of people everywhere having the courage to live a life true to themselves instead of the life others expect of them.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Absolutely!<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>It wasn\u2019t reeeeeeeeeeeeeally extravagant (look, here I go justifying myself &#8211; lol!). Our daughter was on a school trip for a few days, so my husband and I flew overnight from Tokyo to Bangkok on a cheap standby ticket, paid for one night\u2019s accommodation and food, and flew back 26 hours later.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Self-indulgent? Yes, it was. And that\u2019s a Good Thing! I had the opportunity to listen, ponder, meditate, and enjoy time with one of the most important people in my life.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>I love the book <em>Essentialism<\/em> because it shares stories of business people that are so easy to relate to.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>There\u2019s the executive who \u201cwould spend the whole day rushing from one meeting and conference call to another trying to please everyone and get it all done. His stress went up as the quality of his work went down. \u2026his work became unsatisfying for him <em>and<\/em> frustrating for the people he was trying so hard to please.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>And then there\u2019s the former CFO. She wrote, \u201cI didn\u2019t start out with the goal of devoting all of myself to my job. It crept in over time. Each year that went by, slight modifications became the new normal. First I spent a half-hour on Sunday organizing my e-mail, to-do list, and calendar to make Monday morning easier. Then I was working a few hours on Sunday, then all day. My boundaries slipped away until work was all that was left.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Greg McKeown says, \u201cTo discern what is truly essential we need space to think, time to look and listen, permission to play, wisdom to sleep, and the discipline to apply highly selective criteria to the choices we make.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>He gives <b>practical steps on how we can explore what\u2019s truly important to us, eliminate the nonessential, and execute on the vital few things with ease.<\/b><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>These steps are interspersed with success stories.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>There\u2019s the company founder who gathers all his employees in a room for a day once a month without phones, email, or an agenda to simply think and talk. Wow!<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>And the CEO who secludes himself for a week twice a year to do nothing but read articles, study technology, and think about the bigger picture.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>And a famous individual who said no to an unexpected business opportunity to keep a promise to spend time with his daughter.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><b>How we communicate with ourselves impacts how we communicate with others in business.<\/b><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>We can change the stories we tell ourselves, for example from \u201cI need to work hard to be successful and for people to like me\u201d to \u201cBy taking breaks and reflecting, I can be in the best of health and think most clearly and creatively to make my best contribution in society.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>What messages are you telling yourself and others? Are you glorifying busyness?
