Picture this: A talented Japanese businesswoman is updating an executive from global headquarters on the progress of a new project.<\/p>\r\n

She has good news, but the executive thinks things aren\u2019t going so well.<\/p>\r\n

Or picture this: A Japanese businessman is presenting to a potential client the benefits of working with his company.<\/p>\r\n

The benefits are great, but the potential client isn\u2019t convinced.<\/p>\r\n

Why isn\u2019t the message getting across in both these situations?<\/p>\r\n

Because the speaker or presenter is focusing on what to say instead of connecting with the listener or audience.<\/p>\r\n

I\u2019ve seen this time after time in business settings as well as when I\u2019m coaching people as they practice their presentations or role play crucial conversations.<\/p>\r\n

Even if they\u2019re talking about a positive topic \u2013 like the unique features of their product, the latest technological innovations, or a new corporate initiative \u2013 they often have a serious face and a flat voice.<\/p>\r\n

Does this apply to you?<\/p>\r\n

You\u2019re focusing hard on what you\u2019re saying and making sure that your English is correct. Unfortunately, this means that you\u2019re \u201cin you head\u201d and you lose the connection with the audience.<\/p>\r\n

It\u2019s mottainai<\/em> \u2013 a waste, or a shame \u2013 because any positivity or enthusiasm that you might have about the topic doesn\u2019t reach the audience. You can even send the wrong message and confuse your audience.<\/p>\r\n

How can you avoid this kind of miscommunication? Two simple suggestions:<\/p>\r\n

1. Focus on the audience, not on your English<\/b>
It doesn\u2019t matter if your grammar isn\u2019t great, your pronunciation isn\u2019t perfect, or your vocabulary isn\u2019t varied. What matters is looking your audience in the eye and checking that your message is getting across. Have a conversation.<\/p>\r\n

2. Video yourself<\/b>
Before a presentation or an important conversation, video yourself. Look at your facial expression. Listen to your tone of voice. If your topic is positive, are you smiling and sounding upbeat? (Of course, if your topic is serious, your facial expression and tone of voice should be serious too!).<\/p>\r\n
