Not sure how to approach someone or what to say? In Japan, at least the formalities of exchanging business cards give us something to do and say, but what else?<\/p>\n<p>At the networking event following TEDx Roppongi, a gentleman came up to me and said, \u201cI feel very shy and don\u2019t know what to do at networking events.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I told him what I usually do at events where I don\u2019t already know people or I want to talk to new people. I look for someone who\u2019s on their own, smile, say \u201cHello,\u201d and ask them something simple like, \u201cWhat do you think of the event?\u201d or \u201cWhat brought you to the event?\u201d I aim to make this an open question &#8211; one that can\u2019t be answered with just \u201cyes\u201d or \u201cno\u201d so that it invites the other person to talk more.<\/p>\n<p>The gentleman said, \u201cThank you,\u201d and went off into the crowd.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of the event, he came back to me and said, \u201cThank you so much for your advice. I spoke to lots of people and really enjoyed myself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I was so happy that this simple advice had a great impact for him.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes we think that communication strategies and techniques need to be complex and involve lots of steps or frameworks that are difficult to remember.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s important is starting with something simple and doing it.<\/p>\n<p>So, if you normally feel awkward at networking events, I hope you\u2019ll give this a go: <b>find a person, smile, say \u201cHello,\u201d and ask an open question<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>And if you\u2019re someone who has no problem talking to strangers, you can make a contribution by creating space for less confident people around you to take a step out of their comfort zone.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u3053\u306e\u8a18\u4e8b\u3067\u306f\u3001\u30cd\u30c3\u30c8\u30ef\u30fc\u30ad\u30f3\u30b0\u30a4\u30d9\u30f3\u30c8\u3067\u4f55\u3092\u8a71\u3057\u305f\u3089\u826f\u3044\u304b\u3092\u3054\u7d39\u4ecb\u3057\u3066\u3044\u307e\u3059\u3002 \u8a18\u4e8b\u306f\u82f1\u8a9e\u3067\u3059\u3002 \u3069\u3046\u305e\u304a\u5f79\u7acb\u3066\u304f\u3060\u3055\u3044\uff01 Do you feel awkward at networking events?
