– a conversation with Sarah Furuya
When executive coach Sarah Furuya walks into a room of clients, she sees Japanese women who are “phenomenal” and who are the senior leaders of the future. From Sarah’s perspective, she comes in as a business partner.
But, interestingly, those women often see themselves very differently.
They think they lack confidence and need to improve in so many ways.
In our recent conversation, Sarah told me of one client – a 45-year-old Japanese woman and leader – who was constantly asking her colleagues for feedback on her presentations.
She was spreading a sense of “I’m not good enough” to her colleagues and reinforcing that feeling in herself.
When she stopped asking for feedback all the time, people noticed the difference. And she was able to focus on the business results rather than “being good enough.”
Sarah’s recommendation? “Show up, shine, let it go” (a quote from Danielle LaPorte).
Do the work the best you can – and if things don’t go as planned, learn and move on.
If you recognize something that’s really worth improving, focus on that specifically rather than an overall feeling of “not good enough.”
In my conversation with the wise and witty Sarah in Episode 105 of the Sasuga! Podcast, you’ll hear
- How everyone has stories that shape who they are (what stories do you tell yourself about yourself?)
- The connection between a doctor, a priest, and a bartender… (and how that relates to YOU doing what you love most)
- The significance of recognizing your strengths
Enjoy!
