Years ago, I was translating some PowerPoint presentation slides from Japanese into English.

My Japanese was good, but I couldn’t understand what the presenter wanted to say. So I asked him. He said the slides were supposed to be difficult to understand…

I was confused. Why would you purposely confuse your audience?

Because if the audience didn’t understand, the presenter seemed more intelligent. That was his perspective.

I’m good at seeing different perspectives, but this is one that I can’t agree with.

Make it easy for your audience. Why give a presentation if you’re not going to convey your message and get people to think or act in a different way? And how can the audience do that if they don’t understand your message?

So, how can you make your presentations easier for your audience to understand? How can you make your emails clearer for the reader? How can you make your website easier for the user to find the most important information?

I keep asking myself these questions and making changes whenever I notice room for improvement.
