I’ve just been putting the finishing touches to my materials for the Tokyo meeting of the Japan Association of Translators on Saturday, April 19. Even though the focus is children’s book translation, my guess is that this session will offer something for all translators, regardless of specialization, experience, or language direction.
Common questions are likely to arise as we examine snippets of Japanese source text and their English translations:
・ How do I avoid being swayed by the original?
・ How do I adapt the level of detail for the reader?
・ How do I keep an eye on the big picture?
・ How do I deal with different senses of tense or plurals?
・ What’s in a name?
I love running sessions like this because I always learn something from the audience too. Translators are a creative bunch. I hope to see many of you there!
