I enjoyed most of my corporate career in Japan – almost two decades. 

But there was a time when I was becoming more and more stressed – miserable, in fact.

As I worked hard, was promoted, and was given more and more responsibility, I accepted it.

I didn’t want to let people down.

I didn’t want to ask for help.

I put more and more pressure on myself to keep people happy, get all the work done and more, and at the same time I was suffering from “mum guilt” (feeling I was spending too much time on work and not enough on family).

One evening, I remember I was writing in my journal – crying – and I had a sudden realization. I wrote these words:

“I have a choice.”

It suddenly struck me that I was choosing to be in that situation.

No one had forced me to be there. No one was forcing me to stay there.

So, I chose to make a change. 

After talking with senior colleagues about the possibility of moving to a different role, I eventually decided that I wanted a complete change – to leave the company and start my own business.
