“How can I compete in a male-dominated workplace?” is a question I increasingly hear from women.

You may have heard advice like, “Be sure to speak up,” “Go for a beer with the boys,” “Don’t be too easily offended…”

Well, here’s a perspective that’s completely new to most women.

Have you ever noticed that traditional thinking around productivity is based on a 24-hour cycle?

In other words, the expectation is usually to work at the same overall level of productivity each day (of course with some variation throughout the day, like a little lull after lunch).

Well, did you know that the 24-hour cycle happens to coincide with the male hormonal cycle, which also repeats every 24 hours?

But what about women?

Women usually have a monthly hormonal cycle, right? (Yes, it may vary somewhat depending on the individual.)

That’s why it’s natural for us to have ups and downs throughout the month – because our hormone levels change.

Some days you may feel super motivated and productive.

Other days, you just want to curl up in a ball on the sofa.
