– a conversation with Randy Channell Soei

Have you ever experienced a Japanese tea ceremony?

You may see “sado” or “chado” as a form of mindfulness – a lovely moment to escape from the speed and pressures of a demanding job and a busy life.

But have you ever considered what tea can teach you about your day-to-day leadership, team work, and business?

I first met Randy Channell around 30 years ago at the International Seminar of Budo Culture, here in Japan, which we attended every year.

I was practicing karate. He was proficient in Nito Ryu, iaido, kyudo, kendo, and naginata (and also an impressive harmonica player!).

Wanting to dedicate his life to the ideal of bunburyodo (a synthesis of cultural and martial arts) and to balance his martial training, Randy was also studying chanoyu (the tea ceremony), and today Randy Channell Soei is the highest-ranked non-Japanese teacher of the Urasenke tea tradition in Japan.

In my conversation with Soei Sensei in Episode 212 of the Sasuga! Podcast, you’ll hear

  • How The Seven Rules of Rikyu and Rikyu’s Four Principles can help you to produce better quality work, be more efficient, and improve relationships with colleagues
  • What 残心 (zanshin) and 一期一会 (ichigoichie) really mean
  • How tea is about sharing the moment – and it’s a way to bring more peace into your life and work

You can also see Soei Sensei serving me virtual tea on my YouTube channel.

Enjoy!
