The other day, I started rereading a book that I’d put down part way through in the past.

While I remembered a few little bits, I must admit that most of it seemed like I was reading the information for the first time.

Have you ever noticed that?

Maybe you’ve watched a movie or read a book, but then you forgot a lot of what it was about?

That doesn’t mean you’re forgetful.

It’s just how the human brain works.

You’re exposed to a LOT of information every day.

And to be efficient in retaining what’s most valuable, your brain quickly discards information that it doesn’t consider necessary.

In recent years, neuroscientists have increasingly been researching this topic of “active forgetting.”

It seems that the brain considers information worth saving when

  • it comes with a strong emotion (especially something like fear – to protect you from potential danger in the future)
  • it’s repeated (if it comes up a lot, it must be important)
