A young Japanese woman from the audience came to talk to me after I’d spoken at an event some years ago.

In the middle of the conversation, she suddenly stopped and said, “Oh, my English isn’t good. I can tell by the way that you’re looking at me.”

I was confused by her comment because at the time I was actually thinking how courageous she was to speak with me and that she clearly had amazing potential.

But she had created a story in her head. She told herself her English wasn’t good enough.
